Program Officer 
(Reforming Family Law Program) -- Kuwait

Job Location: Kuwait

Freedom House is an independent non-governmental organization that supports the expansion of freedom in the world. Freedom House functions as a catalyst for freedom through its analysis, advocacy and action. Freedom House seeks a Program Officer for its Reforming Family Law Project (RFLP) to be based in Bahrain and Kuwait. The Reforming Family Law Program will focus on developing advocacy strategies for local citizens to reform family laws leading up to the elections in Bahrain (10/2006) and Kuwait (10/2007). The RFLP will analyze laws governing women in these countries, assess opportunities and constraints for expanding women's rights through legal reform, and will work together with women's rights organizations, individual activists and other reformers.

The Program Officer will assist the Project Director in program implementation and development, financial management, daily office management, public relations, event planning and proposal development. He/She will monitor key events in Kuwait and Bahrain, and assist in the building of coalitions in each country.

The appropriate candidate should have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; international human rights or legal reform work experience; knowledge of US government funding sources and program management; and the ability to read, write, and speak English and Arabic. Legal background, knowledge of international and Shari'a law, women's rights advocacy and women's rights in Bahrain and Kuwait are preferred. This is a one year assignment. Future employment is contingent on funding and performance.
